NORTH Melbourne defender Gavin Urquhart will have arthroscopic surgery on Wednesday night to repair knee cartilage torn in last weekend's win over Hawthorn.

Urquhart, 21, shanked a kick-in early in the fourth quarter of Sunday's match, and grabbed at his right knee before leaving the field to have it assessed by club medical staff.

Chief of football Donald McDonald said Urquhart hurt the joint earlier in the game but had not been bothered by it.

"When he had that kick, he actually felt it go and that's why he shanked the kick and kicked it straight to the Hawthorn bloke, who put them in front," McDonald said.

"He'll be off it for a week I'd say. Sometimes with these arthroscopes they're walking around on them the next day. It just depends how he pulls up."

Urquhart, who will be sidelined for at least three weeks, has played all five games for the Kangaroos this season and been given extra time in the midfield.

His return to the senior side could follow small forward Matt Campbell, who is listed as three to five weeks away but may play for VFL affiliate North Ballarat as soon as next weekend.

Campbell damaged ligaments in his right ankle when representing North Ballarat just over two weeks ago, but resumed running on Tuesday.

McDonald said the 23-year-old had moved freely in his early testing.

"Pete (director of sports science Peter Mulkearns) seems to feel that he'll be back sooner than that (three to five weeks)," he said.

"He'll miss this week definitely and he's an outside chance to play next week.

"That just depends on how he pulls up after he trains."

However, it's a slower recovery for vice-captain Drew Petrie, who had surgery after fracturing the fifth metatarsal in his left foot ahead of round one.

The key forward is still three to five weeks from being available for selection.

"He's just got out of the boot, had an x-ray and it's coming along well [and] according to plan," McDonald said.

"He's still got a bit to go yet."

Earlier this month, Petrie said he had his sights on returning in round eight or nine.
