The battle for senior selection is over, but another challenge faces several Kangaroos players as they look to guide North Ballarat to its third successive VFL flag.

After booking their place in a preliminary final, the Roosters will now enjoy a week off before fighting for a spot in the grand final.

While the reigning premiers didn't have it all their own way in the early stages against Casey, a seven goal second term quickly helped swing the momentum.

North development coach John Lamont pointed to Gavin Urquhart (20 possessions, 1 goal) as a key instigator in the Roosters' domination.

"Gav was instrumental when the game was in the balance. His pin-point kicking was a feature and he set up several scoring opportunities with intelligent handballs. He's a quality user of the football."

Brad Scott would have been keen to see how his young players handled the pressure of finals football and Brayden Norris (22 possessions, 2 goals) passed his first test with flying colours.

"It was a really good return from Brayden. Like Gavin, his linking with teammates was exceptional and he kicked two important goals," Lamont added.

Handed the job of quelling Addam Maric and Jamie Bennell during different stages of the game, Marcus White (19 possessions) illustrated why he's caught the eye of the Kangaroos' coaching staff with another strong performance.

White had plenty of assistance from Luke Delaney (16 possessions, 7 marks) in defence.

"Luke beat his opponents and made good decisions with the ball. He was a really solid contributor and has become a mainstay in the North Ballarat back-line."

In the absence of Corey Jones, coach Gerard Fitzgerald was lucky to have Josh Smith in front of goals (12 possessions, 3 goals).

"Josh was a real key in the Roosters' forward structure. He's been played both in defence and attack this year, and it's pleasing that he's been so comfortable in either role.

After a week in the seniors, David Hale (19 possessions, 24 hit-outs, 2 goals) was also a welcome inclusion.

"Haley competed really well in the ruck. He worked really hard to push back and help out the defenders.

"He also spent time as a key forward and considering he was constantly competing against multiple defenders he did very well."
