Scott Thompson's suspension will provide Joel Tippett his time to shine, with the defender set to play on Friday night.

Tippett's inclusion was confirmed by North coach Brad Scott on Thursday, with the former Gold Coast Sun lining up for his first game at AFL level since 2011.

"It's a terrific opportunity for Joel. He's been ready to play senior football all year," Scott said.

"He was very unlucky to miss Round 1. An opportunity opens up for him and we expect him to take it."

The key-defender previously spent time on Brisbane’s list from 2007 to 2009 and was at the Suns in 2011 before being picked up as a rookie by North in 2013.

After two games at the Gold Coast, he was delisted before returning to West Adelaide in the SANFL. There, he spent two seasons under coach Andy Collins who labelled him ‘the best key defender, particularly the best full-back, outside the AFL.’

The 25-year-old has been a dominant player in the VFL in recent weeks, after a strong NAB Challenge campaign in which he claimed the scalp of Carlton's Jarrad Waite among others.
