North Melbourne’s future is in good hands if its emerging talent is anything to go by.

After Aaron Mullett and Jack Ziebell were named in the inaugural 22Under22 team in 2013, Luke McDonald and Shaun Atley are among this year's nominees.

An initial 45-man squad was named on Wednesday, with the North pair considered among the AFL’s best players aged 22 or younger come Grand Final Day.

At just 19 years of age, McDonald has enjoyed an outstanding debut season, securing a spot in the back half right from the opening round.

North’s father-son selection has averaged nearly 18 disposals a game, but impressed most with his fearless approach and attack on the ball.

Atley has been in the system for four seasons now, and like McDonald has become a mainstay in defence.

While many tipped the number 18 to push further up into the midfield this year, his dash off half-back has continued to bring fans to their feet.

Averaging a career-high 19 disposals a game, the 21-year-old has taken his game to another level in 2014.

But the North boys will face some stiff competition from some other potential stars around the competition.

Daniel Talia, Trent McKenzie, Kade Kolodjashnij and Jarman Impey are among those fighting for spots in the back-line.

The final team will be decided upon by voting on the AFL Players’ Facebook page.
