Ryan Bastinac is confident North Melbourne has the players to cover star absentees Daniel Wells and Brent Harvey.

With a lengthy injury list at different times of 2014, the Kangaroos have had eight players make their first appearance for the club during the year. It has spoken to an increased depth and what Bastinac believes will minimise any arguments that the side relies too heavily on its veterans.

“In the past, earlier on in my period, we definitely did (rely on Harvey and Wells) but we have shown this year that is not the case,” Bastinac told the Herald Sun.

“When we didn’t have (Andrew) Swallow earlier in the year and Wellsy wasn’t playing, all us younger boys stood up in big games against quality opposition.

“I think we’ve got a really good mix now and can match it with anyone. If one person goes down another one comes in and plays a role.”

Despite his optimism, Bastinac he was ‘gutted’ after hearing the news of Harvey’s suspension.

Quietly finding form himself, the midfielder says after the disappointment, the focus quickly shifts to Adelaide.

“Brad will just put it aside and focus on this week and the rest of the year,” Bastinac added.

“You can’t really do too much about it now. You’ve got to move on as quickly as possible because if you start talking about, it gets in your head so you just move on and prepare as usual.”

Preparing to play his 100th game on Saturday, Bastinac has been a permanent fixture in North’s 22 since being drafted in 2009. After missing the first of 2011 due to injury, he’s played the last 69 games in the royal blue and white.

Nevertheless, there’s still room for improvement.

“I’ve probably been a little inconsistent, I’m not as happy as I’d like with my year.

“Judging my year, it hasn’t been as good as I’d like but I’m learning different roles and trying to adapt.”
