Brent Harvey’s potential one-match ban for rough conduct on Joel Selwood has dominated the headlines.

With a Tribunal hearing set for 5pm on Tuesday, here’s how various media outlets have commented on the case.

The case for Harvey

Wayne Carey – Talking Footy

“I think it’s a disgrace. It’s a terrible decision.

“He’s got rubbed out because there’s a bit of blood, that’s the only reason.

“If you look at other incidents this year, I mean seriously; the Daniel Merrett one comes to mind, Hawkins just last week.

“(Pedersen’s) had facial surgery and Merrett didn’t even get called up (to the Tribunal).

“It was late and everyone at the time thought that was a shocking decision.

“It is an absolute disgrace that we can rub a player (Harvey) out for a preliminary final for that.

Luke Darcy – Talking Footy

“I am outraged by it and I think the system is completely wrong and out of control.

“There’s a tight legality around it that just doesn’t work. You need the law of common sense.”

Gerard Healy – On The Couch

“The Kangaroos are entitled to go to the Tribunal and basically say there have been too many incidents setting a precedent.

“You could argue Adam Goodes hit Selwood twice as hard as what Boomer did. Buddy Franklin at the SCG…a fairly significant knock.

Joel Selwood – Footy Classified

“It was very minor. I was running at speed, he was coming at me with speed, it happens, accidents happen.

Garry Lyon – Footy Classfied

“What the Tribunal has said on the back of the Hawkins finding is that you can punch someone in the head as long as it’s not too hard.

“I would argue that the contact there (in the Hawkins case)…is even more aggressive than what Harvey did to Joel Selwood.

“I don’t think the force was sufficient for (Harvey) to be sitting out a game, regardless of whether it was a preliminary final.

Jake King - Triple M

“Common sense does not prevail any more.

“You’ve got one of the leaders of the North Melbourne Football Club saying he went to bump a bloke, now bumping is allowed in football, I know you’re not allowed to headbutt which he didn’t, it was an accidental head contact.

“Then you have the bloke who he actually bumped, the bloke he bumped said it was an accidental head clash.

“If they both say it’s an accident, how about people start listening to the players for the first time and actually understand that it is a contact sport.

“Boomer didn’t go and deliberately hurt Joel, Joel saw it and braced him.

“You’re meant to check someone’s run, every player in the AFL does it.

“If he gets done for this it is absolutely ridiculous, common sense is out of the game all together.”

The case against

Mike Sheahan – On The Couch

“The Match Review Panel have rubbed him out on the basis that the incident was assessed as negligent, low and high contact. He couldn’t have wished for any better than that but his history has thrown him out.

“He was able to escape with a reprimand if he had a clean history, but he didn’t and now he’s out.

Gerard Whateley – AFL 360

“From the moment it happened, under the rules as they stand today, there could only be one outcome.

Leigh Matthews – Channel 7

“It’s hard to say that was any different from the (Nathan) Fyfe incident, so he might get a week.”

Mark Robinson – AFL 360

“I keep wavering on this. I look it and think, do we really want a guy missing because of that? That’s probably my heart speaking, but my head tells me that he’s gone. That is the rule.”
