In a year when North Melbourne marched all the way to the preliminary final, it was some unexpected names who took out the fantasy plaudits.

Levi Greenwood and Brent Harvey were the top Kangaroos for the year, far exceeding expectations. Few could have tipped the pair to be as productive as they were, as both finished in the top 20 scorers at their position.

Greenwood produced a magnificent season, easily the best of his career, playing 19 games for the first time and averaging more than 100 points. His form over the second half of the year was immense, scoring 109 per game after the Round 8 bye. He cemented a spot in the Kangaroos' midfield and showed that he could be an effective shut down player as well as an offensive weapon.

Harvey was similarly spectacular in 2014, but for different reasons. The diminutive superstar’s influence didn’t wane at 36 years of age, missing only two games through suspension, and averaging the highest score of his 19-year career. His value in AFL Fantasy was boosted even further with his dual-position eligibility, and as he approaches the 400-game milestone we’ll continue to marvel at his on-field feats.

It wasn’t all surprises, however. Sam Gibson top scored over the regular season – the only Roo to break the 2000-point barrier – while Nick Dal Santo did his best work in the post-season. The ex-Saint provided poise and polish, and the addition of defensive eligibility made him even more valuable.

Andrew Swallow’s efforts upon return from his Achilles injury were also notable – the skipper averaged the fourth-most points of any Roo and played every game after the bye. He’ll be better again in 2015, particularly if he’s able to complete a full preseason.

Speaking of 2015, an early look ahead has Jack Ziebell in our sights as the must-have Kangaroo for the new season. He averaged 85 points this year, but his frequent stints up forward late in the year may see him attract dual-position status. It would mean a fantasy breakout may yet be on the cards.

Stay tuned over the offseason, as we cover the big moves and developments at Arden Street. For now, we’ve come up with some awards for the guys who deserve to be recognised for their outstanding fantasy contributions.
