North Melbourne defender Michael Firrito has described debutant Trent Dumont as a “little gem”.

Speaking to 3AW after the win, Firrito said Dumont had done all that was asked of him in an impressive debut.

"He probably could have played a lot earlier," the 31-year-old said.

"He had a great pre-season and he did some special things. He was influential in that last quarter and that’s what you need from a sub. He didn’t set a foot wrong. Bryce Lewis has done a good job recruiting a little gem."

The 16-point win in Geelong was North Melbourne’s first since 2007, and only the second time Firrito had tasted success at Simonds Stadium.

"There’s been a lot of long and sorry trips down the freeway," he said.

Speaking on his own form, Firrito said a strong pre-season had set the foundation for a promising start to 2015.

"I’m feeling really good. I was able to get work in my body over the pre-season and I think that’s the key.

"You have to be 100 per cent fit, because if you’re only 80 or 85 per cent you get found wanting."

The 234-gamer had special praise for fellow defender Scott Thompson, describing him as a popular player at Arden St.

"He’s an absolute competitor and they are the blokes you love playing with," Firrito added.

"He’s probably everyone’s favourite teammate because you know what you’re going to get and is never beaten."

North Melbourne now prepare to take on reigning premiers Hawthorn on Saturday night and Firrito knows the game will be a tough encounter.

"The Hawks will be looking to bounce back (after their loss to Port Adelaide). They are probably the best side in the comp, if not one of the top-two or three," he said.

"We’ll have our hands full but we’ll just enjoy this victory and then focus on the Hawks."
