As Werribee draws breath in its week off, it sits outside the top four on percentage only.

In its 10 games, Werribee has received significant contributions from the North Melbourne-listed players. NMFC.com.au sat down with senior development coach Gavin Brown and development manager Ben Dyer to get their opinion on how the Kangaroos have performed so far this season in the VFL.

Daniel Currie

Before his foot injury a fortnight ago, Currie was arguably the best ruckman in the VFL. Averaging a monster 39.5 hit-outs in his eight full games, he also drifted forward to be a versatile threat.

“He’s been dominant all year. Everyone he’s played against in the ruck he’s beat, and his follow up stuff has been terrific.

“He’s gone forward, too, taken contested marks and kicked a few bags of goals. It’s added another dimension to his game so he’s pretty hard to play on when he goes forward.

“He’s been outstanding this year and he’s been a real credit to himself.” – Gavin Brown

Majak Daw

Daw has been one of the standouts for Werribee this season. Currently leading the VFL goalkicking tally, the 24-year-old has been a constant presence in the bests. He’s averaged more than two goals a game and more than 15 hit-outs while playing as a second ruck behind Currie.

“He’s been smashing the door down, no pun intended. He’s pretty hard to defend at VFL level when he gets a run at the ball, there’s not too many key defenders that can go with him.

“He’s certainly been putting pressure on the guys in the senior side. As long as he keeps himself in the frame, that’s all he can do.” – Ben Dyer

Will Fordham

After a slow start to the year, the rookie has come along in leaps in bounds. Fordham averaged 12 disposals a game in his first three appearances. Since then his hard-running on the wing has aided his rapid improvement, with an average of 22 disposals and seven marks a game in his last six.

“He has no problem winning the footy, offensively he’s been really impressive.

“He’s getting really good numbers on the back of his high work rate. He’s an aerobic beast with an incredible running capability and he’s using it well to get the footy.

“He’s still learning how to play the wing role and focusing on his kicking which has improved a lot since pre-season.” – Gavin Brown

Kieran Harper

Harper was another to suffer the injury bug early in 2015. His last two games have been promising upon his return.

“He got going in the pre-season before his knee issue that was cleaned up. He’s already moving better than last year.

“He’s a bit more comfortable in his body which is good. He’s impacting games and getting to the right spots. Without getting too carried away, it’s been a pleasing couple of games back – hopefully he gets some continuity and keeps it going.” – Ben Dyer

Scott McMahon

The veteran earned a recall to the North Melbourne line-up for a fortnight off the back of his quality form at Werribee. McMahon’s leadership has been a valuable trait.

“He’s defended really strongly. He’s been playing some strong, solid footy. While he hasn’t got the numbers he normally gets, his one-on-ones have been really good and his leadership has been exceptional.” – Gavin Brown

Ed Vickers-Willis

Vickers-Willis injured his shoulder, requiring surgery which ruled him out for the rest of 2015. Nevertheless he showed promising signs before the mishap.

“He spent the pre-season as an inside mid, which was quite new to him. He would have derived some benefit from that, but then once the season started it was decided to play him in a position where he was a bit more comfortable for his first go at senior VFL level.

“In the small number of games he played, because of his competitiveness more than anything else, he was really hard to play on and had a real defend-first focus that you want in a defender. It was a shame to see him go down because he was tracking quite well up until that point.” – Ben Dyer

Eric Wallace

After an interrupted pre-season, Wallace started in the development league for Werribee. With Currie’s injury, the American played his first VFL senior game for 2015 last week.

“He was underdone early and then didn’t play in the early rounds. With games in the development league, it’s sometimes hard to tell just how players are tracking.

“He was going well, albeit with some areas to work on, but we got a chance to see how he was shaping up when he played in the seniors on the weekend. To his credit he did a lot of good things – all things considered he’s going in the right direction.” – Ben Dyer
