Midfielder Sam Gibson says North has benefited from its mid-season break and is mentally refreshed heading into the second half of the season.

The 29-year-old, who forms part of the Roos' leadership group, has averaged 22 touches in his 12 appearances for the club so far this season.

Gibson said he and his fellow teammates enjoyed a mid-season getaway away from the club.

"We've got three months ahead of us, hopefully more, so it's just a mental break," Gibson told NMFC.com.au on Tuesday.

"Physically, we get enough work throughout the week to get ourselves up every week, but just mentally to be able to go away and not have to worry about preparing for a game and that mental strain of preparing for a game."

The Roos sit with a 6-6 win-loss record heading into Saturday's clash with Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium, with games against Geelong, Essendon and the Brisbane Lions to follow.

Gibson said morale among the players remained high and the side was focused on the task ahead.

"We haven't had the start of the year that we wanted, so there is that desire to get back and get stuck into it because we have got a pretty important 10 weeks coming up," he said.

Gibson acknowledged the evenness of this year's competition and said the Roos' had to bring a strong work ethic in the remaining 10 rounds of the regular season to be any chance of taking part in finals.

"This is the most consistent year since I can remember where there are no easy games and you certainly can't take any opposition lightly because everyone is so competitive these days," he said.

"We're just trying to find a bit of consistency with our performance, training and all the stuff we do throughout the week in the lead-up into games.

"If we bring the right attitude to games we should be okay."
