After injury cut short Sam Durdin’s year, the youngster says his focus is on putting his hand up for senior selection in 2016.

Durdin is in Utah with the Roos’ first to fourth year players and a select group of senior players and told NMFC.com.au he was looking to put the injury blues from 2015 behind him.

“I’m going to look at pre-season and get through that fully and get everything right and try build a little bit of muscle to be right for matches,” the 19-year-old said.

“Hopefully I can put my best foot forward and try and break in to the team, do the best I can and help the team go as far as we can.”

North’s 2014 first round draft pick said he was making the most of his time in Utah, which on Saturday (Sunday in Australia) included a tough session at Salt Lake’s Liberty Park in temperatures below zero.

“At first you have to get used to the altitude and getting your breathing right, because it’s harder to breathe when you’re higher up in the sky,” Durdin said.

“(Today) involved a couple of laps around Liberty Park, which is about 2.2km long. We started with a fairly decent run, then did a couple of circuits around here with a few step ups and squats and that took it out of us. It was one of the more intense sessions.

”For me, it’s been really good. Bit of a different experience, coming to a cold place and experiencing the US, I’ve never been here before. It’s been really good to get to know the new boys and Jed (Anderson).”

Durdin now hoped the work being put in well before season 2016 begins would help set up a perfect pre-season.

“We (the younger players) need that extra fitness bonus, that’s probably what going to help us and push us towards the older guys who have had the experiences of pre-season.”
