North Melbourne is optimistic Daniel Wells will return from injury against the Sydney Swans on Friday night.

Wells has missed the past two rounds with Achilles tendon soreness that developed after he suffered a corked quad against St Kilda in round seven.

North coach Brad Scott told reporters Wells would have to complete the Roos' main training session on Wednesday to take his place against the Swans.

"We won't take a risk with him if he's not quite right, but we're optimistic he'll train well," Scott said.

"We'll see how he trains today, and if he trains well he'll play."

Wells was one of the last North players to emerge from the rooms on Wednesday and started his session with some gentle run-throughs.

Spearhead Drew Petrie jarred his neck taking a low chest mark against Carlton last round and consulted a specialist this week, but Scott said Petrie was in no doubt for the Swans clash.

"It was just a precautionary check-up. The specialist gave us some great news. He's 100 per cent and will train fully today," Scott said.

Fellow forward Mason Wood missed the Carlton win after landing heavily in a marking contest against Essendon a week earlier.

Wood was impressive against the Bombers, but Scott said he was no guarantee of coming straight back into North's 22 against the Swans if he proved his fitness.

"It will probably depend on the availability of others. We've got a few guys that we're going to keep a close eye on, but he'll certainly be in the 25 no doubt," the Roos coach said.

"Then we've just got to work out our structure based on the rest of the players' availability."

Another player who could return against the Swans is defender Sam Wright, who has missed the past three rounds after suffering a "significant ankle sprain" against the Western Bulldogs

Scott expected Wright to put his hand up for selection at training on Wednesday, saying he had "looked really good" at training on Monday.
