A thumb injury sustained in the Cats’ 42-point win over Fremantle on Sunday is set to keep Geelong midfielder Nakia Cockatoo out for up to a month.

"Unfortunately, he's hurt his thumb. He's going to need surgery … and he's going to miss a few weeks, maybe four," Coach Chris Scott told Fox Footy.

"He's having a little bit of a tough run."

The 20-year-old has battled knee and adductor issues since being drafted in 2014.

He has played 22 games and kicked 15 goals.
