Jy Simpkin will undergo surgery on his injured shoulder on Tuesday and is expected to be sidelined for up to six weeks.

The small forward was treated for the injury in the first quarter against Sydney on Sunday, and despite returning to the field briefly, he was ruled out for the remainder of the game.

“Unfortunately for Jy, he has injured his AC joint,” North doctor Peter Bacquie told NMFC.com.au.

“Jy saw a specialist this morning and it was decided that surgery was the best option to repair the joint.”

Simpkin has impressed since debuting in the season opener, playing in six of the Roos’ first eight matches. The 19-year-old was taken with pick 12 in the 2016 NAB Draft.

Meanwhile, fellow forward Taylor Garner could return this week, after he was sidelined with hamstring tightness.

“Given his history, we’ve been ultra-cautious with Taylor,” Bacquie added.

“He’ll need to get through training this week but may be available this weekend.”
