North Melbourne has advised Lachlan Hansen it will not be offering him a contract for 2018 and beyond.

The 29-year-old ends his career at Arden Street having played 151 games, including 13 in 2017.

Hansen joined the Kangaroos in 2006 with the club’s second-highest draft pick – No.3.

Playing the majority of his junior football as a defender, Hansen earned an Under 18 All-Australian selection as a centre half back, reading the play well and also being able to run off opponents with extraordinary endurance.

However he could also play as a key-position forward if needed. At the time of his selection, then coach of North, Dean Laidley, said Hansen was ‘just about the complete package’.

Hansen debuted in the royal blue and white stripes in Round 1, 2007 against Collingwood and took time to develop playing just three games that season, including a semi-final win against Hawthorn – his first victory as an AFL player.

“Lachy quickly forged a reputation as an excellent intercept mark in the AFL and formed a solid backline alongside the likes of Robbie Tarrant, Michael Firrito and Scott Thompson,” North coach Brad Scott said.

Since his debut, Hansen played in six finals with North including an elimination final, semi-final and preliminary final in 2015.

“Lachy has been a delight to coach and has been one of the most dynamic, versatile players in the league. His ability to play forward or back for us was a tremendous asset to the team,” Scott added.

Ahead of his 150th game in Round 13 this year, Hansen told NMFC.com.au his greatest thrills came playing in September with the elimination final against Richmond at the top of the list.

“At the start of that game, they (the Tiger fans) were so loud doing their theme song,” Hansen said.

“Then they kicked the first couple and I thought, ‘oh no’, but then we got composed and after half-time it was so fun.

“The feeling after that game was unbelievable because I didn’t get to play in the year before against Essendon and Geelong.”

Scott said Hansen’s laid back nature and casual attitude toward life made him an immensely popular team-mate and fan favourite.

“He’ll be sorely missed around the club and was one of those unique characters. His ability to keep morale up during this year in particular was first-class and I wish him all the best for whatever comes next for him and his family.”
