With North’s 2018 season complete, North Media analyses the performance of each player by using statistics, a coach review and season highlights.

First up is rookie Tom Murphy.

Murphy's season

While he was selected as a rookie in 2017, Murphy was quick to make an impact at North.

He played in the Roos' second JLT Series game in the pre-season, and quickly secured his spot in the defensive half at VFL level.

After seven matches, Murphy was given a last minute call-up for the Roos' Round 11 AFL clash against Brisbane, running out onto the field barely seconds before the first bounce.

He looked comfortable at the level, playing four straight games, before returning to the VFL late in the year.

Murphy looked mature beyond his years in both the AFL and VFL, and was rewarded with a two-year contract extension in July.

"To get offered a two-year contract I’m very overwhelmed and very appreciative, and can’t wait to stay with North," he said at the time.

His elite kicking and terrific decision-making could see him become a regular in years to come.

What he said

After his last-minute call-up in Round 11
“I wasn’t really sure I was going to debut like that.

“It was a great experience and I think playing a few games after that you just appreciate how good AFL footy is and it just makes you want it that little bit more.

“It was a really good experience to be out there and I loved every moment. It was an overwhelming experience only having a couple of minutes to get ready and it’s not your usual preparation but it was great.”

What the coach said – Ben Dyer

“I’m not surprised about his development.

“From the moment he came in, he’s been really coachable and really diligent. He’s a good example of not mattering where you’ve been taken in the draft, but more so what you do when you get here.

“It’s always good to see those examples of kids that come in as rookies but end up getting an opportunity.”
