AFLW: Kearney shines

Morgan Randolph  September 6, 2018 3:03 PM

Emma Kearney has won just about every award possible, but remarkably, the AFLW superstar might have to make room in her trophy cabinet for one more.

The North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroo has been named a 2018 Fujitsu General Football Woman of the Year finalist.

Launched in 1998 by the Essendon Women’s Network, the award celebrates and honours the achievements of women who have made an exceptional contribution to the football industry.

“I’m honoured and humbled to be considered for this award,” Kearney told North Media.

One of three women in the running after being shortlisted, Kearney’s work in the community has been a standout. Among other achievements, she has dedicated much of her time to helping inspire the young women and girls around her and develop women’s football from community and grassroots all the way up to the AFLW.

Currently working for North’s not-for-profit community arm, The Huddle, as community sport and recreation coordinator, Kearney brings her passion to local schools and communities in an effort to increase participation and inclusion.

Kearney’s work not lost on those she works closely with.

“Emma’s hard work and dedication to women’s football is incredibly admirable and something we can all aspire to,” Laura Kane, football operations manager at North Melbourne said.

“I think she is incredibly deserving of this nomination and am excited to see all that she will accomplish in the upcoming year.”

An external judging panel consisting of AFL Commissioner, Major-General Simone Wilkie, Media Commentator, Sarah Jones and Head of AFL Women's, Nicole Livingstone will decide the winner of the award in the coming weeks with an announcement made on Thursday 27th September at Crown.
