Background: Pre-NMFC

Able to play a variety of roles, Vickers-Willis spent time in the midfield for Sandringham and down back for Vic Metro in Under 18 National Championships.

The 190cm Victorian won All-Australian honours for his performances with Metro, averaging 16 disposals a game at 81 per cent efficiency.

The efficiency was again on show at the Draft Combine as Vickers-Willis registered a score of 26/30 in the kicking test.

Season by Season

North Melbourne’s second pick at the 2014 National Draft, Ed Vickers-Willis was another of the young defenders to make their debut in 2017.

Making his debut in round 5 at Fremantle, Vickers-Willis showed instant maturity and did not look out of place in the seven games he managed in 2017.

Reaching double figure disposals in all but one of his seven games, Vickers-Willis was one of the few bright lights in the round eight loss to Sydney as he racked up 21 disposals in the backline.

A serious knee injury unfortunately ended his season prematurely, and he did not feature after round 11.

2016

Development Manager, Ben Dyer

“Even from early on in the year, when he hadn’t played for the best part of a year and he didn’t miss a beat when he started back again.

“The parts of his game that suggests he’ll be able to transition into AFL footy are that he’s looking to come off to intercept or mark in the air.

“He’s able to understand setups, structures and also adjust in-game. He’s pretty good at that, and you’ve got to be switched on to see things in-game and deal with it.

“He’s really good at reading the cues up-field to know when to come off and when to stay at home (on his opponent). That helps him get it right more often than not.

“As a defender if you’re able to react that split second quicker than your opponent, it puts you in a better position if you’re going to help out.

“He was really pushing for selection in the back half of the year and he was right on the cusp a few times. That’ll drive him over summer and keep him going.”

2015

Mid-season, from Ben Dyer

“He spent the pre-season as an inside mid, which was quite new to him. He would have derived some benefit from that, but then once the season started it was decided to play him in a position where he was a bit more comfortable for his first go at senior VFL level.

“In the small number of games he played, because of his competitiveness more than anything else, he was really hard to play on and had a real defend-first focus that you want in a defender. It was a shame to see him go down because he was tracking quite well up until that point.”

Second half of 2015, from Ben Dyer

“He’s got a fair bit of strength back into the shoulder already and he should be right to go for pre-season.

“We were pretty excited about what he was able to do before his injury. He’s a real pro already with his training and he thinks about the game a lot.”
