North Melbourne’s final rookie draft selection in 2013 was used on Kayne Turner from the Murray Bushrangers.

Turner qualified for the 2013 draft class by just six hours. An inside midfielder, he started 2013 in the Ovens and Murray League before showing rapid improvement in nine TAC Cup games.

At 180cm and 67kg, Turner can also play as a small forward or defender if required.

Season by Season

Season by Season

In his fourth season with North Melbourne, Kayne Turner enjoyed his most productive to season to date, playing 15 games and kicking 17 goals.

Turner is fast-developing a reputation as one of the most tenacious young small forwards in the game, with his pressure and persistence setting the tone from the front for the Roos’.

Turner enjoyed a career high 12.2 disposals to go with his 4.1 tackles per game.

2016

Senior Development Coach, Gavin Brown

“The year was almost a write off for Kayne.

“He did his hamstring against St Kilda in the NAB Challenge and missed a chunk of time. Then he came back and hurt it again and could not get going.

“In the games he did play, a couple stood out. One against Geelong at Simonds Stadium, he played in the midfield.

“That day prompted us to not just play him as a mid-forward but get him up the ground and use his attributes there.

“He looked comfortable there, and it’s an opportunity where he might have another position where he can be used in the future.”

2015

Mid-season review

After his strong finish to 2014, Turner played the first five games of 2015.

He was twice used as the starting substitute, entering at half time in Round 1 and in the third quarter of Round 5.

It was after the second sub appearance where Turner was omitted from the North line-up, sent back to Werribee in the VFL. He was in good form as the mid-season bye approached.

Second half of 2015, from Shane Watson

“The players just love having him in the team.

“They’re the sort of guys you love, he’s a very popular member of the team.

“His form was a little bit up and down through the middle of the year but later in the year he had some good form for Werribee, got rewarded and then held his spot.

2014

From almost being ineligible for the 2013 draft class to an AFL debut just eight months later. It was a rapid rise for 18-year-old Kayne Turner in his first year at Arden Street.

Arriving at North Melbourne weighing just 67 kilos, very few figured Turner to have anything other than a development year in 2014, learning the ropes and becoming acclimatised to the life of an AFL footballer.

However consistent performances at VFL level for Werribee raised the eyebrows of the coaching staff, and soon he was being considered for a North debut. In Round 20, Turner’s time arrived. He was elevated off the rookie list and immediately made an impact against the GWS Giants, goaling in the first quarter and ending with 12 disposals for the match.

A four goal haul in the final home and away round booked the small forward’s spot for the Elimination Final. In front of more than 78,000 at the MCG, he relished the stage, playing an important role in North’s second half comeback.

Following the season, Turner was upgraded to the senior list for 2015.
