Background: Pre-NMFC

Sam Gibson spent many years at VFL level before getting his chance for North Melbourne.

After being bypassed in the 2004 and 2005 drafts, he was selected by Hawthorn in 2006 with the intention of becoming a tagger. Once he was delisted by the Hawks, Gibson returned to Box Hill where he was one of the key midfielders in the competition.

In 2011, Gibson gave himself one last year to be picked up by an AFL club. North Melbourne was the only club interested in the hard-running midfielder, and rewarded his good form by selecting him with pick 63 in the rookie draft.

Season by Season

Transition Coach, Josh Drummond

“It was his best year for us, and he’s underrated in terms of the role he plays for us and how important he is.

“His run and off the ball things that you don’t see are big for us.

“He’s always an option for us when we get the footy and he’s able to hit the scoreboard.

“His defensive side of the game, in being able to run with the best runners of the opposition, adds another area to our midfield.

“He’s so consistent in the way he trains, prepares and plays, so he’ll set a very good example for the younger players.”

2015

Mid-season, from Leigh Tudor

"He's got room for improvement and he's always out there working on them, so hopefully he gets the results.

"He's really valuable with our transition where he can join in with the team in the attack and join in on the defence – he's a good decision-maker in that area.

"He hasn't had as much of the ball this year as he has last year, so the focus for him would be to try and get more of the ball in the second half of the year."

Second of 2015, from Darren Crocker

“Probably from his own admission, Gibbo would say he didn’t have as good a year as he had previously.

“He found his spot in the team in jeopardy at times but he was able to respond strongly, especially late in the year.

“He did terrific jobs in the finals on (Brandon) Ellis, he took (Lewis) Jetta out of the game and controlled (Andrew) Gaff pretty well in the prelim.

“We looked at the opposition’s more damaging players on the outside and we felt that Gibbo had the running capacity to go with those guys as well as get us going the other way.”

2014

In his third year at Arden Street, Sam Gibson took another step forward. Already an undisputed member of North Melbourne’s best 22, the midfielder became one of the side’s most important players.

Able to cover territory like few in the entire league, the 28-year-old once again played every game, taking his tally to 60 consecutive since his debut halfway through 2012.

Gibson was second at North for disposals and led the side in kicks, marks and uncontested disposals. He also increased his numbers from 2013 in disposals (21.6 to 24.6), tackles (2 to 3.5), rebound 50’s (1.3 to 2.9), inside 50’s (2.6 to 2.8) and clearances (1.7 to 2.1).

The number 43’s performance in the semi-final against Geelong caught the attention of the football public, many of whom hadn’t noticed him before. With 35 disposals and seemingly an acre of space the entire night, he earned the very rare five votes in the Syd Barker Medal for his efforts.

2013

Mid-season, from Darren Crocker

“Gibbo is becoming a very consistent player. He had a great pre-season and he’s the best runner at the club. His spread is really good and he just needs to continue to work on his disposal.

“There’s been a couple of stretches where we’ve put him inside to run with an opposition player and he’s been able to do a good job.”

End of season review

Gibson’s role in losses is indicative of his consistency – five of his top seven disposal counts for 2013 came in defeats. The same effort will be there from the number 43 every week regardless of the game situation.

So far in his 35-game career, he has never had a match of less than 10 disposals when part of the starting 21.

2012

Despite promising pre-season form, Gibson was passed over for the first rookie elevation in the lead-up to Round 1.

Impressively, it didn't faze him as he went back to Werribee and was arguably its best player in the first half of the season. He was eventually elevated to the senior list in the lead up to the game against Gold Coast and made his debut in Round 12.

Gibson was a revelation for the rest of the season with his hard running and ability to collect large amounts of the ball.
