As he approaches his 100th career game on Friday, Jy Simpkin's development from injury-struck draftee to one of the leaders and stars of North Melbourne has been engaging viewing for AFL fans everywhere.

The club's current co-vice captain and reigning best and fairest winner, Simpkin has quickly become one of the faces of the football club at just 24 years of age and he's helping pull through the next generation of North talent.

"As leaders of the footy club we've got to stand up. We have a lot of young guys running around and if your leaders aren't doing the job then what hope do they have? We have to lead the way for the team," Simpkin told RSN.

"I've just been myself [and] I do what I've always done. I try to get around the boys, I try to lead with extra touch sessions or extra recovery … I just be myself and leadership comes with it.

"You've just got to get around the guys and make sure everyone's feeling all right."

Simpkin's 100th game will come on the biggest stage of the Kangaroos' home and away campaign, the Good Friday SuperClash against the Western Bulldogs.

After a difficult loss to the Lions in Round 3, North put in a much improved performance against the Swans last week.

Simpkin says his teammates are hoping to continue on from their strong showing last week.

"We know it's a blockbuster game for our club. We want to see all our fans there and we want to put in a good performance, there's no excuses not to," Simpkin said.

"That was a really bad night for us [against Brisbane] so I think, looking back, it could be a good turning point for us. A lot of young guys had a good look at themselves.

"We don't want to close the door on anything and … as long as we continually improve week in, week out … I think that's going to go a long way for us and our success.

"I can't wait to get out there tomorrow."
