Finishing as the team's leading ball-getter and earning a resounding wrap from coach Brad Scott could be cause for celebration for any AFL newcomer but not for Cameron Richardson.

The 23 year-old spoke exclusively with kangaroos.com.au moments after leaving the field on Sunday. While he was happy with his first-up effort, he believe he still has a mountain of work to do.

"I felt like I found the ball alright but the skills were off a bit," Richardson said.

"It was pretty tough going and we were under the pump in the backline. Just the pressure…the second game I made a few kicking errors. Out on the training track, I need to limit my mistakes and hopefully game day it's a bit better. "

Richardson had a great impact in the midfield and defence, highlighted most by his tally of 12 possessions in a half against the Bulldogs.

"I thought my tackling was good which I thought I might struggle with a bit. Just when I got the ball, I didn't have as much time as I'm used to," he said.

"I've just got to use the ball a bit better and take a few more risks through the centre of ground."

Despite his modesty, Richardson's performance gained the tick of approval from Scott, who sees a bright future ahead for the former North Ballarat star.

"He's a very good runner and a very good athlete and we've had a close eye on him for a long time now," Scott said.

"He's a mature-age player and we think he's ready to play AFL footy."

While Richardson's focus is now on improving a few chinks in his armour on the track, he reflected kindly on his first appearance in the royal blue and white.

"I enjoyed it. It was a great honour. I was just really grateful for the opportunity. I've always wanted to have a crack at AFL. It was only the NAB Cup but it was an experience I'll never forget.

"I think we had seven or eight new guys play so it was really good for me and the other new guys."

Two losses meant it was a tough initiation for North's recent additions but with the upcoming NAB Challenge on Saturday at Skilled Stadium against Hawthorn, there's time to turn things around.

"It was a bit disappointing with how we went but I think if we make little adjustments here and there it will make a big difference.

"I think the other teams just took more risks and they were cleaner with the ball. We didn't go through the centre and run and carry. Once we get a bit more confidence we'll do those things."
