As far as big days go, Nick Larkey has experienced few in his life with more significance than today.

The young forward not only learned that he would make his AFL debut on Saturday against Essendon, but he also agreed to terms on a contract extension until the end of 2019.

“It’s been a pretty crazy day … I can’t wait to tell my family,” the 19-year-old told NMFC.com.au seconds after being called to Brad Scott’s office.

The No.40 has missed the past few weeks with knee soreness but nothing was going to stop him from wearing the royal blue and white stripes.

“I thought I was a chance because my knee is a lot better, I had a great session out on the track … I thought I might have a sniff but I wasn’t sure if they were going to wait another week. It’s the best news I’ve heard since I can remember.”

Larkey has had an impressive first year at Arden Street, displaying his talents in the VFL with Werribee.

Standing at 198cms, his agility and ability to run to the right spots inside the forward 50 has been a standout.

At Etihad Stadium, he could have the chance to play alongside Ben Brown and Jarrad Waite.

“I’m going to bring what I have been [in the VFL] and just trust that I can play at this level.”

From the Kew Comets and Oakleigh Chargers, the Trinity Grammar student had to wait until late in the 2016 Draft to hear his name read out but was eventually selected with pick 73 – North’s final pick of the night.

“It’s the best feeling of my life. It’s unbelievable.”
