Michael Close and Chris Jansen were announced as the inaugural co-captains of the standalone North Melbourne VFL team at Tuesday night’s Season Launch event.

Versatile big man Close and gun midfielder Jansen have impressed coach David Loader in the pre-season.

“They have both shown great leadership qualities over the pre-season so far to date, and we really couldn’t split them,” Loader said in front of a big crowd at The Forum.

“After extensive consultation with players and staff these two really stood out.

“We have six terrific guys in the leadership group, and we are looking forward to these guys heading that bunch.

“They both bring different qualities to the captaincy, and we are excited about what they can bring."

Close, who has 27 games of AFL level experience with the Brisbane Lions is excited about his leadership role, and has strong aspirations for the season ahead.

“I’m really looking forward to it. We have a great group of people involved, not only with the players but with the staff as well,” he said.

As well as the VFL staff and list, Close is looking forward to learning from the leaders in the AFL squad.

“We are going to work closely with the AFL leadership group as well to learn our craft and hopefully lead this young group of men onto some success.”

Having crossed from the SANFL, former Central Districts' midfielder Jansen is looking forward to working alongside Close, and with the rest of the six-man leadership group.

“It’s a great honour for both me and Closey (Michael Close),” Jansen said.

"It’s very exciting for us, and we have put a great leadership group together, and a great squad, and we are really looking forward to the year.”

North Melbourne’s VFL side will kick off its 2018 season on April 15 against the Northern Blues at Avalon Oval.
