New recruit Aiden Bonar will take on Scott Thompson’s famous number 16 jumper for the 2020 season and beyond.

Thompson holds the record for games played in the number 16, at 235, and won a Syd Barker Medal and All Australian recognition in 2013.

And the significance isn't lost on Bonar.

"It's an honour to wear a number with a lot of history," Bonar told North Media.

"Scott Thompson is obviously one of the club's great players and I'll wear it proudly."

Before Thompson, Leigh Brown played 118 games in the number 16.

16 has been worn in three of the Roos’ four premiership wins, with Steve McCann donning it in 1977, and Mathew Capuano in 1996 and 1999.

Don Condon holds the record for most goals in the jumper, booting 218 majors between 1944-1951.
