After 21 seasons as an AFL player, it’s fair to say Brent Harvey can talk to the rigors of pre-season training better than most.

So when North Melbourne’s newest additions arrive via the draft next week and step straight into training, what better mentor than the games record holder himself?

Harvey is working with the Roos’ younger brigade three days a week as a first and second year mentor, and is keen to make his presence felt.

“I’m just getting them ready for AFL football,” he told North Media.

“They are very young boys coming into the system, so I’ll help them get their preparation right, make sure they’ve done the little things right off-field.

“Our (the coaches’) job is to teach them the North Melbourne way. It will be a great introduction for them, and they’ve got some great coaches, but also some great players and role models around them, as soon as they come into the football club.”

Take a visit to Arden Street for training and you’ll see a host of familiar faces among the coaching ranks; Leigh Adams and Michael Firrito have returned to the fold, while Harvey has increased his role to include goal-kicking coaching and match-day running.

Three-time Syd Barker Medallist Brady Rawlings begins his role as GM of Football at the start of December.

“They (the club) are not only bringing players back who were really good players, they are bringing back really good people,” Harvey said.

“We all know about Brady Rawlings … Michael Firrito is an absolute gun as a person and Leigh Adams is just a genuine bloke, and everyone loves him.

“I feel comfortable around them because I’ve played a lot of football with these boys, and I think it’s important to bring other people from other clubs in, which we have, but also a mix of the old North Melbourne people.

“As long as they are good people, they are going to suit our football club.”
