Background: Pre-NMFC

Durdin played an important role in South Australia’s win in the Under 18 Championships. Playing as a key position defender and also spending time in the ruck, the 197cm prospect averaged 10 disposals and three marks in his six appearances.

He was also a member of the AFL Academy Level 2 squad and won the AFL Life Membership Scholarship in 2013.

Durdin was best on ground in West Adelaide’s Under 18 Grand Final win in the SANFL, amassing 48 hit-outs, 12 touches and nine marks.

Season by season

Season by season

Durdin missed the beginning of the season after injuring his finger in unfortunate circumstances, and returned via the VFL in Round 8.

The number 24 was given an opportunity when Thompson withdrew late in Round 8, and played nine AFL games.

From Round 18 onwards, Durdin played five consecutive games and was rewarded with a new one-year deal.

2018

It was a frustrating season for Sam Durdin, who had his season cut short after fracturing his tibia in a VFL match in July.

The key defender managed to break into the senior side in Round 10 against Fremantle after Majak Daw was managed, in which he did more than hold his own in.

In that game, Durdin suffered a nasty head knock with Docker Aaron Sandilands in the third quarter, which brought both their afternoons to a premature end.

Unfortunately that was the 22-year-old’s only AFL appearance for the year, however he continued to refine his craft alongside Ben McKay in the VFL to form a formidable partnership down back.

2016

Senior Development Coach, Gavin Brown

“In the pre-season Durds hurt his shoulder, so obviously that’s not great for a marking player.

“He played some development league football this year, and took a little bit longer to get going before playing some solid footy in the back half of the year.

“The really interesting point about Durds is in the last game of the season, through necessity, we put him back and he looked really comfortable.

“It’s quite exciting, his ability to use the ball by foot and his decision making really suited us and he looked quite good down there.

“That’s another string to his bow. He worked really hard on his marking and he improved that, although he’s still got a way to go in that regard.

“He would be pleased with the way he finished off the season.”

2015

Mid-season, from Ben Dyer

“It was a good half-year for him from the point of view of playing against some really different opponents. There were strong opponents who wanted to wrestle; others who wanted to move him around.

“What he’s probably learned is that at senior VFL level you have to be good all the time. He now appreciates that you’ve got to be good in a number of areas to play against those forwards and it’s been an education in concentrating and applying himself for the whole four quarters of the game.”

Second half of 2015, from Ben Dyer

“Where he plays in 2016 we’re not sure yet. Down the track maybe he is a key forward, but for an induction into senior (VFL) footy, having the game in front of him probably isn’t a bad idea.

“His rehab has been going well and he’s been able to get a good skill block. We’re looking forward to see what he can do over summer.”
