The continued development of rookie Will Fordham has been a highlight in the VFL this season.

The 19-year-old notched up another 26 disposals, 11 marks and 7 inside 50’s for Werribee on Sunday to cap off an impressive month.

But while his statistics and attacking game were eye-catching, it’s another area of improvement that is most satisfying for the youngster.

“It was a much better defensive game, probably my best one this year,” Fordham told NMFC.com.au.

“It’s just about covering off and getting back to be able to help out the defenders. Yesterday I was better at doing that, while also covering my man at the same time.”

In Fordham’s role as a wingman, he’s often the first link in the chain when his side gains possession. But he also has to remind himself of his defensive responsibilities. It’s a tricky balancing act.

“That was a bit of the problem I was having (earlier in the year),” Fordham said.

“I was trying to go as the outlet too early and then that would mean I had zoned off (my opponent) a little.

“You’ve got to try and pick the right time to go. It’s hard but you’ve got to be smart about it.”

Development Manager Ben Dyer has seen Fordham progress well after his limited pre-season, and sees the foundations of a player that could become successful at AFL level.

“We’ve been really pleased with his development,” Dyer said.

“He’s got the attributes to be an AFL player with the speed and endurance combination being a huge thing. The way he runs both offensively and defensively can stand up at the next level.

“His kicking is one thing he’s got to get better at, but he works pretty hard at that at every opportunity.”

Fordham is well aware of the areas he needs to improve, and he’s frequently spotted on the training track getting in extra kicking practice.

“I’ve still got a bit to work on but I think I’m going in the right direction,” he said.

“I’ve been doing a lot of work on my kicking, so I’ve got to keep doing that. That’ll mean working with the development coaches and also getting some more running in to keep my fitness up, it’s what I value.

“It’s a lot of technique stuff. I had a bit of a problem with my kicking, (but) in the last few weeks I’ve felt it starting to come together.”
