It’s one thing to have your name called out on Draft night, but it’s another to find out that AFL games record holder Brent Harvey will be your mentor.

That was the scenario that North’s first selection, Jy Simpkin, faced when told about Boomer’s new role at Arden Street.

“Yeah awesome, I didn’t know that, that’s great news. I can’t wait,” A delighted Simpkin said.

Like Harvey did for 21-years, Simpkin hopes to add some flair to the Kangaroos.

“I think I’ll start off as a half-forward I guess … hopefully a bit of x-factor around the forward line, kick a few goals and hopefully make my way up to the midfield.”

But before he hits the ground running, the 18-year-old still has to make a full recovery from a broken leg.

“I’ve obviously been out all year so I can’t wait to get stuck into training and get back out there,” he said.

“It was obviously really frustrating doing it in Round 3 so I’ve been out ever since. I’ve only just started running again not long ago so a big frustration but I’m glad it’s all over and done with.”

Tonight though, he’s never felt better after being drafted at pick 12.

“I feel stoked. It’s a big honour and I can’t wait to get started,” he said.

“I was pretty nervy because obviously you hear a few things of, “you might go here, you might go there”, so it was definitely a big relief when North called my name out.

“My phone’s never gone off so much in its life.”
