North great Brent Harvey has praised Paul Ahern for his resolve and ability ahead of his AFL debut on Sunday.

Harvey, who has worked closely with the 21-year-old since arriving at the end of 2016, believe few deserve the opportunity as much as Ahern.

“He’s certainly earned his spot, because Brad (Scott) doesn’t give away games,” Harvey told SEN.

“Paul has played some really good football, and it’s fantastic to see him get some reward for his efforts.

“He had a couple of knee re-constructions before he came to North Melbourne.

“He had 12 months without playing football when he first arrived, and he’s done everything right.”

One of the best ball-users in the club’s history himself, Harvey says the former first-round pick’s kicking ability gives him the flexibility to play in multiple positions.

“He’s a beautiful kick with great skills,” he said.

“He can play a little bit off half-back and he can play on the wing because he moves really well.

“I think North Melbourne would want him kicking the ball inside 50 because he’s a lovely kick.

“If I was playing him, I’d probably be playing him on the wing, and telling the players to get the ball in his hands where he can kick the ball into Ben Brown, because you know it’s going to be coming at Benny’s eyes.”
