North Melbourne has been recognised for its outstanding work with Australian African communities at a gala award ceremony.

The Celebration of African Australians National Awards recognise high achieving African Australians from all walks of life and pays tribute to organisations that have made a positive contribution to the African community in Australia.

The award was given to the The Huddle in recognition of the work it’s doing to provide various sport and education opportunities to residents in and around the local North Melbourne area.

“The Huddle’s relationship with our local African community has always been extremely positive and something that is very important to us,” general manager of The Huddle Dr Sonja Hood said.

“The football club has a proud tradition of welcoming new arrivals and migrants and we’re constantly working to create an inclusive environment for everyone through The Huddle classroom.”

The Huddle offers a range of different programs for local children, students and adults to get involved in and these were all applauded on the night of the Celebration of African Australians National Awards.

“We are committed to engaging with the people in our local area and encouraging social cohesion through a variety of different sport and education programs. We have something to suit everyone from study support, to football, volleyball, drop in basketball, music and much more.

“Our Team Africa football team was also recognised on the night for the brilliant way it connects young African Australians together through sport.”

The award was presented by The Hon. Kate Lundy, Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Teresa Gambaro, Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Citizenship and Settlement and Judge Rauf Soulio, Chair of the Australian Multicultural Council.
