North Melbourne coach Brad Scott says it’s a ‘really important week’ for the club as Michael Firrito and Scott Thompson prepare for milestone matches.

Firrito will play his 200th game, and Thompson his 100th against the Bulldogs on Saturday.

“Both Spud (Firrito) and Scotty Thompson epitomise what it is to be North Melbourne people,” Scott told the media at Aegis Park.

“They’re great examples to all our players.”

Firrito, recruited in the 2002 Rookie Draft from the Box Hill Hawks, made his debut in 2003 and has only missed one game since the start of 2007.

Thompson arrived from Geelong’s VFL side in the 2007 National Draft. In 2013 he has been in career-best form, holding several opponents goalless in the first six rounds.

“Both Michael Firrito and Scott Thompson are quite outstanding footballers, where people on the outside probably consider them great fighters and great battlers. The truth is they’re better than that and it probably reflects our team a little bit.

“They never say die, they’ve got great attitude, they’ll fight until the death out on the ground… probably a bit reflective of our club; they’re great people but their talents probably do fly under the radar a little bit.”

Scott is adamant the playing group will be right up for the task of honouring their milestone men.

“The players will want to show the due respect to our champions, and Firrito will certainly go down as a champion of our footy club. Scott Thompson in his 100th game is well on the way to achieving that status,” he added.

“Our guys know the importance of it and they’ll be doing their utmost to make sure they pay them their due respect.”

Scott also highlighted the excellent defensive form of Thompson in the early part of the season.

“I think he (Thompson) deserves to be in contention (for an All-Australian spot). It’s a long season and he’s had some terrific results and played some really good footy.”
