"If it was Round 16 or 17 right now, I’d absolutely 100 per cent want to play next year.”

The annual Brent Harvey contract discussion is set to get underway with the club legend about to sail past a remarkable 400-game milestone.

Despite North’s indifferent start to 2015, Harvey has maintained his typical high standards in a multitude of different roles.

The veteran started the year playing off half back, then moved into his more regular position of half-forward after the first month. He has comparable numbers to his 2007 season; a year where he finished equal second in the Brownlow Medal.

While it’s unrealistic to think Harvey will be in that conversation come the end of the season, the general point of the comparison is to indicate how he is still performing at a relatively similar level to what were arguably his ‘prime years’ – almost a decade ago.

In 2007 and 2008, Harvey polled 22 and 17 votes respectively in the Brownlow Medal. He won back-to-back Syd Barker Medals in this time. He averaged 24.2 disposals and almost 1.3 goals a game during this period.

Flash forward to 2015 and from 11 matches, the 37-year-old has notched 23.6 disposals a game.

His impact in front of the goals has been affected by more time down back, but in recent weeks a shift back into his customary midfield-forward role has seen him back to his damaging best. Harvey has kicked six goals in the past six matches.

It seems even after 395 games, there’s no slowing him down.

If everything goes to plan for the rest of 2015, Harvey will finish the year on roughly the 405-game mark; potentially a handful more if North replicates its finals run from last season.

This would put Harvey within reach of a record previously thought to be almost unbreakable – Michael Tuck’s 426 career games.

The Hawthorn champion played for 20 seasons, finishing his career with a remarkable eighth premiership in 1991.

Assuming Harvey plays each of the last 11 games in 2015, he’ll need to play 21 in 2016 to pass Tuck.

However there is the small matter of the only active player currently ahead of Harvey – Dustin Fletcher.

The Essendon defender notched his 400-game milestone in Round 9 against Richmond, but was injured during the game and has been forced to sit out the last fortnight as a result.

It has allowed Harvey to close the gap between the two to just five games, despite Fletcher starting his AFL career three seasons earlier.
