A Tasmanian artist has shared his special take on North Melbourne’s 1996 Premiership win, producing a unique piece of art.

Pencil and charcoal artist Ben Austen has re-created the moment Wayne Carey and Denis Pagan lifted the Cup at the MCG 20 years ago, with a spectacular hand-drawn piece.

Austen spent many hours painstakingly working through every bit of detail in the original image many North fans will know and love.

The 1996 Premiership was certainly one close to Austen’s heart.

“I’ve been a North Melbourne supporter for a long time,” Austen said.

“The likes of Carey, (Corey) McKernan, that was my era, so doing this picture, I remember exactly where I was that day.

“That was the club’s first premiership for nearly 20 years. For me to do the piece, that’s pretty special for me.”

Austen kindly donated the piece to the club, which will be auctioned off at North Melbourne’s night-of-nights, the Syd Barker Medal and via the club’s website.

A full-time property valuer by day, Austen said art was an escape he loved and only took up in recent years.

“I think everyone has a creative side to them. When I do the drawing, it’s completely about switching off. Drawing for me is, I suppose, a meditation.”
