North cult hero Ben Brown has been rewarded for a standout debut season with a contract extension.

The key forward’s new deal links him to Arden Street until at least the end of the 2016 season.

“I’ve just tried to put my head down and work hard right from the start,” Brown told the Herald Sun’s Gilbert Gardiner.

"It's fantastic to finally get up to the level and to know I can play up at the level... to get a contract extension at this stage was something I probably didn't contemplate - at the start of the year I just wanted to improve and that (extension) doesn't really change anything in that sense.

"I'm just going to keep on trying to improve as much as I can."

Overlooked in three national drafts, the 200cm Tasmanian was eventually taken by the Kangaroos with their final pick (47) in the Draft last year.

He claims the wait for his opportunity has made him hungrier than ever to succed.

"It does make you hungrier when you miss out for three years and then decide that you still want to do it," he said.

"I could've figured out over that three years that I didn't want to do it, stayed in Tassie and played basketball which I used to play or gone away from footy completely, but I put my head down and worked hard.

"That's the only thing that really got me to where I am now - it's the only way I know.

"As great an extension is, you still have to keep working hard because in this game you can't slack off even for one training session."

Set to play his seventh AFL game when the Roos take on the Crows in his home state on Saturday, Brown has been a revelation in attack alongside Drew Petrie and Aaron Black. The trio kicking 14 goals in the last two matches.

“We feel like we’re playing well together... we’re not getting into each other’s space too much,” Brown said.

"Drew is our target player, but if we can chip in where we can, play our role and like last week where we all got 15-plus touches, kick two goals each, I think that's better than having one of us come out and kick eight and the other two not touch the footy.

"We'll just keep on working at gelling more and more and I suppose that's going to be really important as we come into finals and we're really looking to make a dent in them.

"I think the whole club is confident going in, confident without being over confident."

His wild red curls and extremely long run up during his set shots at goal, Brown says he wants to be taken seriously.

"The thing that I want to do is really prove that I can play football, that I'm not just a sideshow coming into the team," he said.

As for that run-up, he knows it's not pretty, but says it does the job.

"I looked even worse (last year) than I do now when I was running in for goal I had a big long run up and I was bent over double pretty much," he said.

"It's all about trying to keep my body straight, if I keep my body straight, drop the ball straight, the ball will go straight.

"I've learnt to deal with it, to change it too much I don't think would be true to myself and allow myself to kick as many goals as I can.

"While that's the best way I think I can do it, I'll keep doing it."
