North Melbourne midfielder Trent Dumont's encouraging progress in 2015 has earned him a new two-year deal with the Roos.

Dumont's initial two-year contract at North was due to expire at the end of this season, but he has now recommitted to the Roos to the end of 2017.

The South Australian was North's second pick in the 2013 national draft at No.30 overall and made his AFL debut in round four this season, kicking a key last-quarter goal in the win against Geelong.

Dumont has now played six games, including the past five in a row, and has started four of those matches in the substitute's green vest.

The 20-year-old told NMFC.com.au he was excited by the thought of what North could achieve over the next few seasons.

"It's an exciting time for the club. We've got a good young list and hopefully we'll become really strong and a powerhouse of the competition," Dumont said.

The inside midfielder was unable to break into North's senior team in his first season despite an outstanding year in the VFL with North Ballarat, when he was named in the Roosters' best in nine of his 17 games.

Heading into 2015, Dumont said his focus was simple.

"I was just worried about playing good footy and being the best person I could be and I thought it would all [unfold] after that," he said.

Dumont said he had "learnt a fair bit" this year coming up against opposition "guns", but had also come to appreciate just how good some of the competition's lesser lights are.

As for his recent stints as North's substitute, Dumont admits he would prefer to start on the ground but appreciates team balance comes first.

"Obviously I'd like to be out there for a full game, but if I have to be the sub I'll more than happily play my role and that's what I'm doing at the moment."
