North Managing Director and CEO Carl Dilena says outgoing AFL Chairman Mike Fitzpatrick has left the game in a strong position.

Fitzpatrick announced his retirement from the AFL Commission on Wednesday, with Richard Goyder set to take over the top job in April.

“Mike has left a lasting legacy for the competition,” Dilena told NMFC.com.au.

“During his time he has taken the game to another level, including introducing two new clubs and the AFLW, as well as leading the league through three media rights negotiations and a big rise in participation at the grassroots level.

“There is no doubt the game is in a much better position now than when he first took on the role of Commissioner. On behalf of everyone at North, we wish him well in the future and thank him for his service to the game.”

Dilena said he was looking forward to working with Goyder as the new Chairman of the AFL Commission.

“It’s a great appointment and an exciting time for the game with Richard coming into the role,” Dilena added.

“We wish him all the best and look forward to working closely with him.”
