Star midfielder Shaun Higgins has agreed to a contract extension with North Melbourne, taking him through until the end of the 2019 season.

The 29-year-old was already contracted for 2018 and has been in career-best form averaging 22 disposals and 5 tackles a game.

“As long as the club felt I could be a benefit to the team, I had no hesitation in signing an extension, knowing that I still have my best footy ahead of me,” Higgins told NMFC.com.au.

“I’ve loved my time at Arden Street and while this year has been somewhat disappointing, I'm really excited by what the future holds and strongly believe we are on the right path."

Since arriving at North as a restricted free agent from the Bulldogs, Higgins has taken his game to a new level and has become one of the league's most damaging players.

He was critical in his first season with the Kangaroos in 2015, helping the club reach the preliminary finals.

Injury curtailed his output in 2016 however, limiting him to only nine games including an elimination final. So far this season, he has played 15 games.
