Ahead of North Melbourne's first season with a standalone VFL side, we'll be following the team's progress from the first training session, right through to the first game.

Today, we meet the Roos' inaugural VFL coach, David Loader.

It was by no strike of fate Loader landed the job as North’s VFL coach; a development coach at North, he boasts years of playing and coaching experience, and with one key element he believes is critical for success.

Where it all began...

The bulk of Loader's football career was played at the SMW Rovers Football Club in the Mininera District Football League.

Retiring in 1994 with around 200 games to his name, Loader then went on to coach the senior side for eight years.

Loader’s junior football years were spent at Waurba and Lexton.

From player to coach...

Loader’s coaching journey began in 1995 at SMW Rovers. He coached the club to a premiership in 2003.

His success saw more opportunitis present, with a move to North Ballarat Rebels.

Over nine years at the club he undertook many roles, starting off as Development Coach in 2007, Backline Coach in 2008, Midfield Coach in 2009, Senior Assistant Coach in 2010, before he became Head Coach for the next five seasons.

Loader moved to North as a Development Coach in 2017, nurturing the Roos' emerging players, before accepting the role of VFL Coach for 2018 and beyond.

Coaching achievements...

Senior Premiership (c/c) at SMW in 2003
TAC Cup finals 2011, 2012, 2014
TAC Cup Coach of the Year 2013, 2014

What we can expect...

Loader believes understanding players is what drives success.

Developing the squad by implementing AFL standards of training will allow for a one club approach across the grades, resulting in greater depth of talent at the club and smoother transitions throughout the season.
