Gold Coast ruckman Tom Nicholls will need to prove his fitness later in the week, if he's to make himself available to play North Melbourne.

Nicholls was a late withdrawal from the Suns' side that defeated Greater Western Sydney on Saturday.

“Tommy did hurt his calf late last week which was disappointing, but fingers crossed he will do some training later this week and put his hand up for selection,” Gold Coast's High Performance Manager Stephen Schwerdt told the club's website.

“He has a few things he has to cross off before he reaches that stage though.”

When the sides last met, Nicholls had 16 disposals and 33 hit-outs against Todd Goldstein, with the latter finishing with a career-high 59 taps.

Rory Thompson was forced to take on the ruck duties against the Giants in Nicholls' absence, and although he battled bravely conceded 42 hit-outs to Jonathan Giles.

The Suns could call up Charlie Dixon should their preferred ruckman not be right, with Thompson needed to line-up on one of North's key forwards.

Dixon (groin) and Harley Bennell (calf) made their returns from injury via the reserves on the weekend.

“It was good to get them both through a full game, and we anticipate they will both be available for senior selection this week," Schwerdt added.
