Round 1 was full of surprises, including the aerial acrobatics of 180 centimetre small-forward Lindsay Thomas.

But perhaps the biggest shock was his omission from the AFL’s Mark and Goal of the Year categories, despite some more than worth efforts.

Late in the third quarter with his team on the ropes, North’s number 12 gathered a loose ball on the 50 metre arc. With an Essendon opponent bearing down, he pushed closer to the boundary, summed up the situation and slammed the ball on his boot.

Lucky not to end up in the crowd after a shove from his opponent, Thomas could only gauge from the crowd’s reaction that his kick had sailed through the goals.

Then there were his marks; a huge leap over Michael Hibberd in the first term brought the North fans to their feet. He again used the Bombers’ defender as a step-ladder in the second quarter to pull down another big grab.
