It was a resounding win for North Melbourne this week, which meant that the onfield result again filtered down to the players’ fantasy scores.

North had five of its midfielders score over 100, with Ben Cunnington, Leigh Adams, Daniel Wells, Nick Dal Santo and Sam Gibson all reaching triple figures.

Dal Santo in particular has been immense since arriving at Arden Street in the off-season, and based on his first four games for the club could be back to his fantasy best.

Ben Cunnington was the best performer for the Kangaroos with 127 points, showing clean hands and desperation in the wet. He had 30 possessions (20 contested), 11 clearances and 10 tackles in a dominant midfield display. His AFL Fantasy price has now increased to $458,676 and it’s worth trading him into your team if you have an underperforming premium.

After playing the role of match-winner in recent weeks, Brent Harvey was tagged by Ben McGlynn. He still managed 80 fantasy points, however, and only dropped $8,333 in price – if you own him he should be going nowhere. Boomer is the third ranked forward in AFL Fantasy so far this year and he just keeps getting the job done.

Scott Thompson was sensational for North, standing and containing Franklin when he was in the forward 50 and setting up behind the footy when his opponent ventured up field. He picked off numerous Swans’ attacks and recorded a fantasy score of 98. Priced at $395,117, he will occasionally have games where he wins plenty of the footy, but he’s a risky pickup in AFL Fantasy. There will be many occasions where his opponent will keep him too busy to worry about accumulating possessions.

Aaron Black defied the wet conditions to boot three goals, but only managed one mark for the game, keeping his fantasy total to a low 65. Drew Petrie got involved at times, but only managed four marks and one goal himself. Still, it was a more promising result that last week’s 11 and he’s now dropped $142,010 from his starting price. He’s a reasonable candidate for a trade-in option in the next week or so.

Finally, Lachlan Hansen had a blistering opening term and looked well on the way to a fantasy ton, but faded after quarter-time to finish on 77. Leigh Adams on the other hand is enjoying a mini resurgence early in 2014, and with 127 fantasy points has pushed his fantasy average up to the 95-point mark for the year.

Fantasy Wrap: Around the Grounds

Gary Ablett continued his hot start to the year with another 130+ fantasy game, while Steve Johnson stamped himself as a fantasy must-have with a season high 168. If you don’t have these guys, work out a way to get them in.

The taggers struck hard and fast in Round 4, however, with Jobe Watson (78), Leigh Montagna (65) and Trent Cotchin (70) all well held. Put these names on your watchlist – they are proven fantasy stars and a quiet game means that their price will drop in the short term.

Dane Swan finally managed a fantasy ton, albeit only just. He’s now dropped $100,000 off his starting price, but we think he’s turning the corner, and if you’re looking a super-premium to upgrade to, he should bottom out in price over the next fortnight.

Lance Franklin, Travis Cloke and Josh Kennedy continued the plight of power forwards in fantasy this year. All failed to break 60 fantasy points, and are performing well below their pre-season rankings so far in 2014. All three are leaking cash, so if you don’t jump off tnow then you’ll have to ride this form slump out and hope they improve soon.

Jack Gunston is one to trade in now, if you don’t already have the Hawthorn sharp-shooter. A score of 138 this week has his price on the rise, but he is really thriving in Franklin’s absence. He will set you back a tidy sum of $442,043, but that’s still considerably less than the top-line options.

Richmond debutant Sam Lloyd was impressive on Friday night despite his team’s loss, with 111 fantasy points. Priced at just $165,962 he is a likely candidate for downgrading in the forward line. Any of Gary Rohan, Jay Kennedy-Harris or Jarman Impey would be an ideal ‘trade-out’ candidate if you wanted to bring in the young Tiger.
