He may be the only player to have kept Lance Franklin goal-less so far this season, but Scott Thompson knows even a repeat performance won’t be enough to get the job done against the Swans in Friday night’s preliminary final.

If the Roos knock off Sydney at ANZ Stadium, they’ll play in their first Grand Final since 1999.

“They are a great team with so many great players,” Thompson told the Herald Sun.

“They have been in some really good form.

“You look at their players within the team and so many of them are stars. So we are going to have to play our best to beat them.

“But we dare to dream. We are only one game away from playing in a Grand Final.”

When the teams last met in Round 4, Thompson kept Franklin to 13 touches and one behind in North’s remarkable 43-point win.

“All the teams left in it, we have beaten this year,” he said.

“That gives us a bit of confidence going into the preliminary (final).”

Thompson has the backing of North legend Glenn Archer who says the Roos have the power to curtail Franklin and co.

“When you play against (Franklin) and players like that, you need some good help around you, and some help in the midfield, so they can’t deliver it to him,” Archer said.

Thompson knows that Franklin will be out for revenge, but says it can’t be much worse than having to contain a determined Tom Hawkins and a fast-finishing Geelong during Friday night’s semi.

“It was such a nervous time and when the siren went, it was an unbelievable feeling,” he said.
