Much of the Utah training camp has been about fitness and teaching the players about living an elite lifestyle, but Brad Scott and his coaching staff are intent on improving the list’s skill level.

Several indoor training sessions have been scheduled at the Brigham Young University campus which is situated in Provo - about a 45 minute bus ride from Park City where the Roos are currently based.

“We’ve really picked up the volume of skills. Clearly that’s important,” Brad Scott explained to kangaroos.com.au after one of the solid sessions.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do in that area and the boys know that so we’ve really got to increase the volume that we do in the skill level and this particular dome here provides the perfect environment where we’re out of the elements and we can really hone the technique side of things.

“We’ve identified from our post-season review that there’s a lot of skill work that we’ve got to improve on and particularly our ball movement so that’s an area that we’ve identified and we’ve put together a program that we really think is going to rectify that so we’ve got a lot of work to do but we’re really looking forward to doing it.”

Scott says the training loads have been tough, but no tougher than what he expects the other 17 clubs to be doing. Nevertheless, he’s been impressed with the way his players have gone about things.

“Their work-rate is first class. I don’t think their work-rate is any better this year than what it was last year, it’s just simply that their capacity to work has improved a lot so the amount of volume that we’ve been able to put into the players has really gone up significantly this year and they’ve handled that increase in load really well.”

For the players, training inside a multi-million dollar facility has many benefits with the snow now tumbling down in Utah.

“It does the job, keeps us nice and warm,” Ben Cunnington said.

“It’s actually a pretty nice surface. We’re lucky to be given the opportunity to train here at BYU so we’re grateful for it and it’s a good surface.”

Some have even begun joking about constructing a similar setup back home to help escape training in the cold during winter.

“…It’s absolutely amazing, I think we’re going to get one at Arden Street or Aegis Park I should say so I think Drewy (Petrie) the highest paid player at the club is going to chip in the majority of the money which is a good gesture, so the boys are pretty happy at the minute,” Brent Harvey joked.

On Sunday though, there will be no escaping the icy conditions with an outdoor skills session planned at Park City High.
