A late season foot injury may have cost Daniel Currie the chance to claim the VFL’s highest individual honour, the J.J Liston Trophy.

The North big man had an outstanding first half of the season with Werribee, before injury curtailed his progress thereafter.

Currie and Essendon ruck Shaun McKernan were bucking the trend of ruckmen traditionally not catching the umpire’s eye, as they led the way with 11 and 10 votes respectively after the opening 10 rounds of the season.

But the Roos’ number one played just two games thereafter in the regular season, finishing the night four votes behind eventual winner Nick Rippon, of North Ballarat.

Currie was by far North’s most prolific vote-winner on the night, with Scott McMahon (four votes), Majak Daw (one vote) Kieran Harper (one vote) and Ben Brown (one vote) next in line of the Werribee-affiliated players.

At North Ballarat, Ryan Bastinac polled four votes in just four games, while Robin Nahas received three and Shaun Atley one.

Eric Wallace was also handed two votes for his efforts in the Development League.
