Over the years, April 21 has been quite momentous for North Melbourne. From season changing wins to remarkable turnarounds, seven matches have brought three wins and four losses.

Round 4 2007

North Melbourne 5.4 (34), 6.6 (42), 7.13 (55), 12.15 (87)
Brisbane 1.6 (12), 5.9 (39), 6.13 (49), 8.15 (63)

Goals: Brown (3), Wells (2)
Brownlow Medal: 3 - Simpson (NM), 2 - Wells (NM), 1 - McIntosh (NM)

After a lowly 14th placed finish in 2006 and the loss of Nathan Thompson to a season ending knee injury, three successive losses to start 2007 had many experts predicting a wooden spoon for North.

But on April 21, 2007, the narrative changed dramatically. Playing at its then home-away-from-home in Carrara, North managed to work past a bout of third quarter inaccuracy to register its first win of the season and a six game winning streak followed.

Did you know?
Seven Kangaroos had played under 25 games in this match - six of the seven are still regulars in the AFL, five with North Melbourne (Matt Campbell, Aaron Edwards, Hamish McIntosh, Andrew Swallow and Lindsay Thomas).

Round 3 1979
North Melbourne 0.3 (3), 4.13 (37), 9.14 (68), 18.19 (127)
Collingwood 5.5 (35), 7.7 (49), 11.12 (78), 14.15 (99)

Goals: Blight (7), Dempsey (3), Bond (2), Byrne (2)

At quarter time it appeared North was on its way to a heavy loss after failing to score a goal. But Malcolm Blight had other ideas.

At the end of a three week stretch that yielded an incredible 22 goals, Blight kicked seven against the Magpies and was part of a nine goal last quarter that turned a 10-point deficit into a 28-point win.

Did you know? In his only season with North Melbourne, Russell Ebert played all 25 games. Ebert's career spanned a total of 452 games for Port Adelaide, North Melbourne and South Australian representative clubs, and he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1996.

Round 3 1973
North Melbourne 2.1 (13), 7.7 (49), 10.11 (71), 11.18 (84)
Fitzroy 4.3 (27), 5.7 (37), 10.15 (75), 10.18 (78)

Goals: Davis (2), Schimmelbusch (2), Wade (2)

In an excruciating final quarter, there was just one goal between the sides despite 11 scoring shots. Luckily enough, that goal went to North Melbourne and it won by just six points.

Did You Know? Illustrating just how North was positioned for a great run of success, only one player in the squad for this match was over 30 years of age.

Round 2 1956
Geelong 2.1 (13), 6.7 (43), 9.9 (63), 16.14 (110)
North Melbourne 2.4 (16), 2.4 (16), 2.9 (21), 2.10 (22)

Goals: Eastmure (1), Spencer (1)

After their win to start the season against St Kilda the week before, the Roos were quickly brought back down to earth by Geelong. The Cats would end up in third position after the home and away season and showed why with this display.

Round 1 1951
Collingwood 7.6 (48), 10.8 (68), 16.15 (111), 20.21 (141)
North Melbourne 0.1 (1), 4.3 (27), 4.4 (28), 7.6 (48)

Goals: Foote (2)

In North Melbourne's first game since its loss to Essendon in the 1950 Grand Final, it was clear the players were suffering from a psychological let down. They could only manage seven wins and ninth position in 1951.

Round 1 1945

Collingwood 2.4 (16), 5.5 (35), 10.7 (67), 13.13 (91)
North Melbourne 4.1 (25), 6.4 (40), 7.5 (47), 10.10 (70)

Goals: Findlay (6)

A narrow loss to Collingwood signified the start of a season that would result in North Melbourne's first ever VFL semi final. Bill Findlay led the goalkicking in 1945 with 49, and started off the year with six out of North Melbourne's 10.

Round 1 1928
Richmond 3.2 (20), 7.5 (47), 11.10 (76), 14.15 (99)
North Melbourne 0.2 (2), 0.4 (4), 1.7 (13), 2.9 (21)

Goals: Cameron (1), Healy (1)

Despite the win total for 1928 improving on the previous year by two, it took until the third quarter for North Melbourne to register its first goal of the season in a 78-point hiding. Staggeringly, six of North Melbourne's players on the day had played eight games or less.
