Jed Anderson will aim to continue his development as a leader among the North Melbourne midfield, as he looks to build on a third-placed finish in the Syd Barker Medal.

The 27-year-old was a shining light in a challenging 2020 season, and says injuries to other key players gave him the chance to make his voice heard.

“Not having Ben Cunnington last year through injury meant I had to stand up and take control of the midfield,” Anderson told NT News.

Anderson said he’d definitely be open to taking on a more official leadership role, with his focus firmly on helping North turn the tide under new coach David Noble.

“It was a disappointing last year, but now with Nobes taking over the club and steering us in the right direction, we’re looking forward to the new season,’’ he said.

“He’s got the playing group engaged and really excited at what he’s brought in, to the point where we’re confident our movement up the ladder has already started with the new game plan and game style he’s brought in, plus a number of new draft picks.’’

The likes of Jaidyn Stephenson, Will Phillips and Tom Powell will add further to the club’s on-ball depth, alongside already established players like Ben Cunnington, Jy Simpkin, Luke Davies-Uniacke and Anderson.

The North number three keen to play a key role again, backing up his best year to date, having averaged 21 disposals, 5 tackles and 4 clearances a game.

“I just focused on playing footy last year and was very lucky to have the family in the hub with me, I’m excited and looking forward to playing again in a few weeks,’’ Anderson added.
