Two of North Melbourne's Tasmanian players are firming for 2022 debuts, according to Head of Development Gavin Brown.

Matt McGuinness and Pat Walker, both of whom signed one-year extensions at the end of the 2021 campaign, have been putting their hands up for a senior call-up at different times over the pre-season.

Walker, who was close enough to a debut last season to make the emergency list against West Coast in Round 17, has shaken off the ankle injury that prematurely ended his first season of senior football.

"Pat Walker had a pretty serious ankle injury and operation at the end of last year but he’s come back in really good condition. He came here as a defender but he’s playing a little bit more in the wing role and he’s taken to it really well," Brown said on a recent Member Q&A, presented by AIA Vitality.

"He’s got a massive tank, he’s a really good size, he’s a beautiful kick and he’s a really good decision-maker. He has to continue to work a little bit more on his contest work, more from a technical point of view.

"We can see him playing on the wing in the North Melbourne jumper for sure. It’s a little bit about doing his time [in the VFL], but having said that if you jump up and you’re playing really good footy you’re going to get picked."

Since being drafted as a Category B rookie in 2019, Matt McGuinness has been trialled in a number of different positions, with the rangy key position sized player possessing the attributes to play anywhere on the ground.

While he's currently sidelined with a foot injury, Brown says McGuinness has been making strides towards a senior call-up.

"He came here as a defender, we actually put him forward and a little bit on the wing last year. He’s about 194cm, he’s a really good size and he’s got a beautiful left foot kick," Brown said.

"He was looking really good to the point where he probably would have played in the last couple of senior practice matches. Unfortunately for him it didn’t pan out that way but he’s making some really good progress.

"He has some really strong attributes and we’ve put him back into the backline where he looks really comfortable … he still needs to put a little bit more size on for senior AFL footy, but he’s heading in the right direction."
