Just three days out from the season opener against Essendon, North Melbourne trained away from Aegis Park to continue its preparations on Wednesday.

Brad Scott opted for a change of scenery and the players responded with a highly productive session.

The battle for spots is reaching its final stages with the team to be announced Thursday evening, so naturally there was significantly more on the line.

Despite Drew Petrie's suggestion there might not be any first gamers, Brad McKenzie and rookie Sam Gibson were impressive and kept their hopes for an early debut alive.

The Bombers have a plethora of tall forwards, which means there are plenty of opportunities for North Melbourne's key defenders. Nathan Grima trained strongly with the main group and could be a surprise inclusion showing no signs of the knee injury he suffered in the NAB Cup opener.

In Jack Ziebell's absence, there is an extra spot in the midfield up for grabs and Cruize Garlett and Levi Greenwood are right in the mix, keen to make that place their own.
