Upon his arrival at North Melbourne it was assumed Jason Horne-Francis would spend much of his time in the forward line as he adapted to the rigours of AFL football.

A recent move into the midfield has paid dividends though, with the No.1 draft pick earning a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination for his performance against Carlton in Round 7.

Horne-Francis is just the latest addition to a long line of young and exciting players at Arden Street, joining the likes of Luke Davies-Uniacke, Will Phillips and Tom Powell as the future of the club's midfield stocks.

As with many young players, Horne-Francis is looking to his more senior teammates to help him improve in his young career.

"I've definitely had Jy Simpkin by my side a lot. He's really invested in this young midfield group and he's been working with us a lot," Horne-Francis told Sportsday.

"With 'Cunners' (Ben Cunnington) coming back (to training), I really wanted to get to him and learn a bit of stoppage craft because he's one of the best stoppage players in the competition. I'm definitely trying to learn a few things off of him."

Horne-Francis' performances so far this season have been a bright spark in the team's difficult start to the season. The development showcased by the number one draft pick is exciting to say the least.

While the Kangaroos have won just one game so far in 2022, there have been glimpses of the talent and future of the club's young players. It's difficult but exciting times for Kangaroos fans at the moment.

Horne-Francis says he's aware of the process the club is currently undergoing.

"We're on a journey and I think all the boys and the coaching staff, we know the journey we're on," he said.

"We're really excited and we're taking it all on and embracing it. It's going to be a long process but we have to try and maintain that consistency.

"If we bring effort and intent each week, we'll improve."
